DEF for Trains

Diesel exhaust fluid is used in trains to reduce NOx emissions from the exhaust gas of diesel engines which are equipped with SCR technology.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a high quality operating fluid that is used in conjunction with diesel trains and SCR technology. Filled into a separate tank on the train, Diesel Exhaust Fluid is easy to handle, non hazardous and safe to use. Air1 is Yara’s brand of Diesel Exhaust Fluid and has been used in trains since 2010.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid from Yara is branded Air1

  • Diesel Exhaust Fluid is used in trains to reduce the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the exhaust gas of diesel engines which are equipped with SCR technology.
  • Diesel Exhaust Fluid Bulk or Minibulk containers can be situated at a given point to refill Diesel Exhaust Fluid in trains as per the customer needs, as long as certain storage guidelines are met.

Yara has developed its knowledge and expertise in the Diesel Exhaust Fluid market since 2004, so is able to bring this information, and its Diesel Exhaust Fluid in trains experience to other train operators as they begin to operate SCR diesel engines.

How is Diesel Exhaust Fluid used in trains?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid is filled into a separate, dedicated tank on the train chassis. The Diesel Exhaust Fluid is injected from the tank into the exhaust pipe, which is in front of the SCR catalyst, but downstream of the engine. As its heated in the exhaust, Diesel Exhaust Fluid changes into ammonia and CO2. When the nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases, from the exhaust pipe, react inside the catalyst with the ammonia, the harmful NOx molecules in the exhaust are converted into harmless nitrogen and water, which is released to the atmosphere as steam.
