Yara Belle Plaine Surgical Fund

Yara Belle Plaine provides major boost for Hospitals of Regina Foundation's Surgical Campaign.

Patients needing surgery in Regina's hospitals are sure to benefit from the latest initiative in Yara Belle Plaine's long-standing partnership with the Hospitals of Regina Foundation. Yara has pledged a $500,000 match for community donations, to launch the Foundation's Yara Belle Plaine Surgical Fund which means that funds raised in the community will have double the impact.

“We are committed to supporting causes that make life better for our employees, their families, and our communities," says Yara Belle Plaine President and Plant Manager George Pohorelic. “In addition to the new pledge, we're proud to have contributed more than $650,000 since 1995 to Regina's hospitals through the Foundation. We're excited about this new chapter in our partnership because we know the Yara Belle Plaine Surgical Fund will elevate the level of surgical care for all patients, and will undoubtedly save lives."

The Foundation has pledged to raise $3 million through its Surgical Campaign, to help upgrade all surgical suites at the Pasqua and Regina General hospitals. The funds raised will help replace and upgrade the surgical booms in the operating suites that are more than 30 years old.

New surgical booms allow for safer use of medical gases such as anesthesia, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. In addition, the new booms will keep monitors and other electronic devices conveniently located but also out of the way of the surgical teams, to make surgery even safer and more efficient. That time-saving efficiency may literally mean the difference between life and death for some patients.

In 2018, almost 27,000 surgeries were performed in Regina's hospitals, and demand will continue to grow as southern Saskatchewan's population grows. The surgeries performed in Regina run the gamut from life-saving emergency operations and removal of cancerous tumors to more common operations like knee reconstruction and cataract removals. Because surgical procedures impact patients, their families, co‑workers, and friends, it is vitally important to provide surgical teams with the very best technology available, so they can provide the best possible care when it's most urgently needed.

“The Foundation greatly appreciates Yara Belle Plaine's leadership in supporting improved surgical care in Regina's hospitals," says Lisa Green, Vice-President, Development, Hospitals of Regina Foundation. “Yara's support will go a long way towards ensuring life-saving technology is available to help patients live better lives."
