Control the Things you Can!

The Uncontrollable

Digging in the snow.jpg

2018 harvest was difficult to say the least in New Brunswick, Canada.

OK. Breathe. In 2018, especially from a weather standpoint, it seemed like a decade of Mondays ganged up on us all at once across North America. We had, in many cases, a late spring—or no spring, followed by a hot, dry summer and then an early winter that seems to be dragging on and on. All of this has had various degrees of effect on potato yield and quality. In farming, weather is always the unknown and (with the exception of irrigation) the one great factor over which we will have zero control. All we can do really is have faith that the sun will rise, the rains will fall, and the wind will blow. With all this said, farmers are the most resilient, most resourceful people on Earth and 2019 has all the makings of a landmark year in potato production in North America!

Here's to blue skies and big harvests in 2019!

So, What Are the Things We Can Control?

Weather aside, there are many things we can control to help ensure a profitable crop. Here are just a few:

  • Choosing the right variety and matching it to the right land
  • Good crop rotations to help with weed and pest management
  • Sound tillage practices that minimize compaction and erosion
  • Responsible irrigation and water management
  • Comprehensive crop nutrition - This is where Yara’s TopPotato solutions can help.

Taking Control of Crop Nutrition

To take control of your crop nutrition program there are several factors we need to address.

  • Have a good up-to-date soil test and follow up with in season soil and tissue analysis to identify nutritional trends before deficiencies occur.
  • Understand the specific nutrient sensitivities and seasonal demands of the potato crop, especially as they affect the purpose for which your crop is grown: seed, processing, fresh, or starch.
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of various crop nutrition products in the market and how they can play a role in delivering the most profitable crop possible.
  • Make sure we practice the 4Rs (Right Source, Right Rate, Right Timing, Right Place) of nutrient stewardship to produce the most efficient crop nutrition program possible that has minimum environmental impact.

Each of these topics will be discussed at length in future newsletters and Yara North America podcasts, but for now I wish for you a great 2019 season, and remember that with Yara, knowledge grows!
