NOx Reduction for Inland Vessels

Inland shipping along the Mississippi river system represents a large part of the transport of goods in the USA. There are also other rivers and canals in the East and West of the country that are used for such transport, as well as on the Great Lakes.

Inland shipping along the Mississippi river system represents a large part of the transport of goods in the USA. There are also other rivers and canals in the East and West of the country that are used for such transport, as well as on the Great Lakes. In addition, some ferries transport passengers along the coastline or on the Great Lakes.

This industry is working towards even cleaner, faster and more efficient barges, tugs, river tankers or ferries. This means a reduction of NOx emissions (nitrogen oxides) emitted from the combustion chamber of their diesel engines.

Yara is a key supplier of technology and urea based reagent for secondary NOx emission control. We can deliver solutions that will help the inland shipping sector in the USA meet its NOx emissions requirements. Our offer for inland shipping NOx emissions control includes:

The urea based reagent

The urea based reagent, marketed under the name NoxCare 40 to bunker stations along the main rivers and lake shores. This is a 40% urea solution, distinct from Diesel Exhaust Fluid as inland shipping doesn’t require the same purity of product as trucks and cars do. However, it is important to choose the right quality of urea reagent for the good performance of the SCR system.

Euro IV

Tier 4 Legislation

In the United-States, marine diesel engines used on inland waterways must meet increasingly stringent emissions requirements. Marine diesel engines are used in a wide variety of inland vessels ranging in size and application from recreational pontoon boats to dry bulk cargo barges.

What is NOx Reduction and SCR

Ahead of the NOx control legislation for inland shipping, some barges, tugs and river tankers are already being equipped with SCR technology and use urea solution based reagent in their daily operations. The SCR system for inland shipping as in other NOx control applications is quite sensitive and, therefore, it is very important to use the right quality of reagent. Yara has the experience of both SCR shipping systems and of delivering NOx reagents based on urea to NOx control applications for maritime applications.
